Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme Scheme

Detailed Information About Subsidy on Loans Under the PMEGP Scheme

Under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), the subsidy offered for starting a new business depends on the category of the applicant and the location where the project is being established.

Subsidy Percentage Based on Applicant Category

Applicant Category Subsidy in Rural Areas Subsidy in Urban Areas
General Category 25% 15%
Special Categories (SC/ ST/ OBC/ Minority/ Women/ Differently-abled) 35% 25%

How Is the Subsidy Disbursed?

  • Once the loan is sanctioned, the bank applies for the subsidy online within 15 days.
  • The subsidy amount is then transferred to the bank’s account within the next 15 days.
  •  Note: Sometimes technical issues may delay the process. Hence, it is important to respond promptly to any requests or instructions from the bank.

What Is a Back-Ended Subsidy?

  • The subsidy under this scheme is provided in a back-ended format.
  • This means the subsidy amount is not transferred directly to the borrower’s account at the beginning.
  • The benefit of the subsidy is applied only after you have repaid an equivalent portion of the loan from your own contributions.

3-Year Lock-In Period

  • The subsidy amount is locked-in for a minimum period of 3 years.
  • During this time, the loan must remain active and in good standing.
  • If the loan becomes irregular or overdue, the bank has the right to forfeit the subsidy amount.

Loan Installments and Interest

  • No interest is charged on the subsidy amount.
  • However, the remaining portion of the loan is subject to interest as per bank norms.
  • Therefore, it is essential to pay EMIs on time and closely monitor your loan account.

Legal Consequences

  • If the loan is repaid prematurely (before 3 years) or becomes non-performing (NPA), the subsidy will be forfeited, and the bank may take legal action to recover the outstanding amount.

Important Caution

  • If required documents are not submitted or there is a delay in completing the subsidy process, your application may be rejected.
  • It is therefore recommended to fully understand the entire process and take the help of a qualified advisor or expert.

If you are planning to start a new business and wish to avail the benefits of the PMEGP scheme, it is crucial to clearly understand the rules, eligibility criteria, and procedural steps. With proper planning and execution, this scheme can provide a strong financial foundation for your entrepreneurial journey.
